چکیده
Experimental and theoretical analyses are presented that assess true mode II fracture toughness, KIIc, energy, GIIc, associated process zone (FPZ) in anisotropic rocks. The term signifies the type of crack grows a self-planar manner as result shear stresses, thus differentiates it from generic often extends by forming tension-induced kink. We give basis for sinusoidal variation present simplified relations direction dependence GIIc an plane. Our experimental data on Grimsel Granite validate this model, thereby providing supporting evidence KIIc rock indeed follows sinusoid function. This model takes only two principal values to characterise toughness energy any within also show noticeably higher than ones I, one must distinguish between these when formulating growth criteria Lastly, thorough analysis strain localisation obtained digital image correlation gives insight nature FPZ, demonstrates FPZ is semi-elliptical shape has comparable size with I crack.

On the fracture toughness anisotropy of mechanically poled ferroelectric ceramics
In this paper an incremental constitutive theory for the deformation due to switching in ferroelectrics is applied to predict the fracture toughness anisotropy in these materials after mechanical poling. Mechanical poling of an initially unpoled specimen differs from electrical poling in that only mechanical stresses are applied to the material. Therefore, no electrical polarization can develop...
متن کاملPoroelastic fluid effects on shear for rocks with soft anisotropy
A general analysis of poroelasticity for vertical transverse isotropy (VTI) shows that four eigenvectors are pure shear modes with no coupling to the pore-fluid mechanics. The remaining two eigenvectors are linear combinations of pure compression and uniaxial shear, both of which are coupled to the fluid mechanics. After reducing the problem to a 2 × 2 system, the analysis shows in a relatively...
متن کاملFracture toughness measurements on igneous rocks using a high-pressure, high-temperature rock fracture mechanics cell
A sound knowledge of mechanical properties of rocks at high temperatures and pressures is essential for modelling volcanological problems such as fracture of lava flows and dike emplacement. In particular, fracture toughness is a scale invariant material property of a rock that describes its resistance to tensile failure. A new fracture mechanics apparatus has been constructed enabling fracture...
متن کاملFracture toughness of snow in shear under friction.
The fracture toughness of snow in shear is one of the most relevant parameters when studying the mechanics of snow slab avalanche release. Double-cantilever snow beams were loaded asymmetrically to determine K(IIc). If crack surfaces touch under applied pressure, the fracture toughness in shear of snow (rho=247 kg m(-3)) is K(IIc)=680+/-60 Pa m(1/2). Screening of the stress intensity at the cra...
